2nd year electives

This year we had to chose two electives which would each last for 6 weeks, i chose to do typography and concept studies. In typography we were asked to create a alphabet we were given a selection of word and we had to create a type relating somehow to this words, whether it be a direct link or not. I chose the word disabled, i decided to source images of appliances which disabled people use in everyday life and create a alphabet from these images.

Concept studies is all about ideas and thinking we were asked to think of anything we want really, it was a very open brief. I chose to design a range of poster which would have pictures of car parks, street, houses etc and everything would have a price tag on. The concept behind this idea is that everything evolves around money, and everything comes with a price.

Thoughtful

Thoughtful are a graphic design agency which we have had a lot of contact with this year, made up of three guy's James, Stuart and Chris, they are a fairly young agency with lots of new, fresh ideas. Thoughtful are a 'thoughtful' agency which go by a 'nothing is too much trouble' serivce. These guys aren't about big fancy, show-off things, they are all about good graphic design and a good service towards their customers. After Christmas six students from our class have the chance to work with Thoughtful for 6 months, they are moving into our college and we will become full time graphic designers. This is a once in a life time opportunity and will give the lucky six a head start when we finish this course. Visit their website to find out more about Thoughtful at http://www.wearethoughtful.com/index.html or check out my links to go straight there.

Truth

The Graphic design agency Truth came into college to speak to us about their experiences within the graphic design world, and also to show us some of their work. The talk was really interesting they have done some really good work for big names like Durex, Reebok, Versus Cancer and lots more. They had loads of useful tips and experiences to share with us and i learnt a fair bit. Here are some examples of their work including the poster advertising their talk to us.

1st year work

Here is some examples of my work that i did in the first year of my degree course. I can't remember the brief's word by word but i do know that we could only use type to create images and we all got given a type face to work with, mine was Scala sans.

Barcelona

I recently went to Barcelona with my degree course for five days! It was amazing a really cool place to visit apart from all the thief's and prostitutes at night! We went to see a Miro exhibition that was held at a museum, it was really good to see all his work in real and up close. We also visited some other museum's and of course the aquarium which was fun. And like good old fashion students we went out to test the local bars and club which i have to say weren't bad at all!! While we were away we had a mini brief which was to collect pictures or video clips and produce at least three short video clips which show Barcelona, i will post these up when i have finished them.

D&AD Student brief

D&AD student award competition is our most recent brief, we have had to choose one out of four briefs to develop idea's for, then after four weeks of idea's generating we get given another four competition briefs to choose one to develop. Then after we have developed two different competition briefs we will choose one to go ahead with and if it's good enough we will be entered into the competition. The first brief i have chose is to design three front covers for Faber and Faber's film range books. We are only aloud to use type and the design must be able to be applied to all the different books within the film range. The second brief i chose was to design a new look and the packaging for a range of seeds called 'Grow Your Own' at Homebase. It is a range of fruit and veg seeds for novice gardeners to encourage them to grow their own produce as it is cheaper and healthier.

Magazine Brief: Ted

Recently at college we have had to create a magazine consisting of a front and back cover and 3 double page spreads. We had three choices we could either re-design New Scientist magazine or The Observer free insert or create a new magazine based on a website called Ted. So i chose to do Ted! Therefore main article wasn't given to me like the other magazines so i went off and chose a article on how children learn, then got to work. Four weeks later the deadline arrives and i have a magazine sitting in front of me. As part of the brief we had to make a 1 minute movie showing how we got to the finished product, i can't upload the video at the moment but here are some pictures of my finished magazine.

Liverpool Trip

Yesterday our course took a trip to Liverpool for the day to go to the Liverpool Tate and the Liverpool Design Symposium at St George's Hall which was a major industry event for creative practitioners and students such as myself. We started off the day meeting James from the design company Thoughtful, he took us around the Tate and then around Liverpool as he has been one of the designers involved with the Liverpool Biennial Made up international exhibition 08. We saw this amazing giant spider made out of metal, hanging from a web between this building.

After our tour of Liverpool we headed to the St George's Hall and heard some great talks, starting with The Emotional Type, from international typographer Bruno Magg founder of Dalton Magg, he had some great tips to tell us and showed us a lot of his work and how he got to his final pieces. I also heard a talk from D&AD who gave us some tips on how to break into the industry and what stands out at the awards. They showed us this years D&AD award winners work, which i have to say was amazing so well thought through and executed, pushing the boundaries. The day finished off with a great talk from Matt Pyke founder of Universal Everything, he showed us his work for clients which included some big names such as London 2012 Olympics, Audi and Channel 4. He talked about his company a bit which i found interesting as his clients list is so diverse he covers a great deal of design fields which leaves his portfolio a big range of different design, which is possible for his company as it is made of a mix of designers, programmers, animators and musicians.
So overall was a good day, listened to some interesting talks from amazing designers and learnt a lot of great tips for the future.
