Body Shop

Another competition brief was for body shop, which is to,

Create an unconventional brand campaign for The Body Shop to reinstate its position as the original pioneer of ethical beauty.

I've decided to team up with Sarah and work on both this brief and Metro together. I was really interested in this brief as I do like body shop products so I am happy that I am going to give both briefs a go.

Metro

We have just been given some new D&AD 2010 student competition briefs, we had to choose which ones we wanted to do out of about 7 or so, I chose the Metro brief, which is;

Create a transport advertising poster campaign and strapline that cuts through the visual noise of the everyday commute to promote Metro newspapers.

I chose this brief because it sounded interesting and I'm looking forward to see what happens.

Critical journal

Yes, that's right the dreaded Critical journal. The time has come, the end is near and to finish off the three years of studying is a lovely 5000 word journal and a 20 minute presentation. We have to write about our own work and something that we are interested in and want to know the answer to. So after trying to decide over all of the summer holidays I have settle on the ' Creative process' I am planning to explore other designers creative process and their techniques for finding ideas, and hopefully improve my own. I have sent a questionnaire out to a few designers and thankfully got some really good replies, and all the research is done so I just have to assemble it all. I'll post it up when it's finish.

Pecha Kucha

A Pecha Kucha is a presentation style, it was created in Tokyo, and the format is 20 slides, 20 seconds apiece for a total time of six minutes and forty seconds. Over this last summer holidays our tutor asked us to do a mini Pecha Kucha, consisting of only 10 slides still 20 seconds each. We were asked to base our Pecha Kucha on our influences as a graphic designer, we could use work and other designers or we could include totally random things that influence/ inspire us.

This got me thinking over the holidays at what influences me, at first I thought about other designers work, but the more I thought about it the more I realised that as a designer everything influences me, I found that I can't pin-point one thing, as everything we see, hear and feel influences me from my family to a shopping bag.

AIGA brief

At the moment I am currently working on a brief to promote the designer of 2015's predicted trends that have been posted on the AIGA website. I have chose to work collaboratively on this brief with Vicky Carr, we are two weeks into this brief and it's only today that we have really seen the light! Starting to get into the swing of things now. We have decided to choose one of the six trends to concentrate on, we decided on No.5 - Sharing experiences: a co-creation model, which is basically interaction and customisation. We are in the process of creating a interactive poster which will be put up around Stockport college and hopefully MMU and Salford Universities, and we will monitor what happens to the posters. I'll post the finished poster and recorded activity when it's all finished in a few weeks.

Fake I.D workshop

The other day Fake I.D came into college to do a workshop with us. We had to get into pairs so I was with Vicky, then we got given a picture and had to create a script to record which related to the image but not in the way that everyone would first see it. This was the script me and Vicky did, I'll try and get the picture up soon but to hear them recorded goto www.wefakeid.com they should be up soon.

Portfolio

Recently at college we have had to make portfolio's for ourselves and go to visit graphic design agencies with them. I decided to make a book for my portfolio, I am still working on some project to put in it but so far this is what I have got in it. I have taken screen grabs from my PDF of my portfolio so you'll have to imagine that the pages are back to back and I've taken out the blank pages and the descriptions so basically this is just the work that my portfolio contains.

One day brief - Environment

We got set a one day brief to go out into the environment to the location we picked out of a hat, and sit there until we rote 600-1000 words on what is happening and the surrounding, without editing it. I picked the multistory car park and this is what i wrote...

Multistory car park in Stockport, aprox. 13.40pm on a Tuesday afternoon.

The weather is fairly bright the clouds are hiding the sun at the moment though and there Is a slight breeze. People still have sun glasses on though. A lady walks past with a Woolworths bag, kind of strange seeing as thought Woolworths has closed down. Can here children coming up the stairs, a little girl with her mother in a school uniform getting told to be quiet by her mum, she has stopped making noises, they get into the car, a silver Vauxhall starts the engine drives off. A plane flies over the top of me, very loud, Manchester airport is near so it’s low down, wonder where they have been? where they coming from? who’s on the plane?. Blue ford drives around the car park, Why is it blue? passes about fifty spaces but drives to the very end out of my sight. Can hear a slight clanging noise when the wind picks up. Old lady walks past me, no bags funny coloured shoes on. Birds are flying about. Can hear a squeaking noise. The parking space lines have nearly worn off some are worse than others. Floor is tarmac with little holes in it, there is bird poo near my foot. Another plane goes by. A man comes out from the stairs, chequered shirt on, glasses nearly bald but has grey hair, well what’s left of it, his pockets jingled with change. Silver Yaris is reversing out of the space, is a woman, can tell, she goes back in think she’s parking up. She walks to the back of her car to check she is in the lines! Ha! There are lamppost dotted about the car park, have green metal barriers around the bottom of them, I think that’s so the don’t fall over when people crash into them. A woman appears from the stairs carrying a big box with her car keys in her mouth, puts box in car, locks car, and walks back down the stairs. Man walks past with shades on a fag sticking out his mouth, he is fairly old got no hair, walks back past the other way! Two old ladies walk past chatting, both dresses very nicely with suit like jackets on, look respectable, been to M&S. Silver Peugeot parks up, first time. Wind has died down a bit. Purple KA passes by, parks as near to the pay machine as possible, lazy woman. Can hear traffic from the main road near by. Fag man appears again without the fag give a ticket to the Peugeot lady then walks back to the stairs and goes down them this time. There is a pavement around the edge of the car park, supposed to have yellow paint on the edge but has nearly all rubbed off. Why doesn’t any one re-paint it? Lady with red jacket and dark curly hair gets out a sports car, goes to pay machine. Old lady at the other side of car park, lots of bags, walking slowly, looks like she is struggling. Red jacket lady comes back puts ticket in her car, walks to the stairs. Winds picked up, quite chilly. Know what the clanging noise is, it’s a wire banging against the lamppost. Another plane. Car alarm is going off, plane drowns the sound. Oldish couple come from the stairs been to M&S the man is holding his car keys they are gangling about. Lady comes from stairs eating Gregg’s pasty, can’t smell it but looks nice. Old lady gets into a red Yaris opposite me, spend a bit of time sorting herself out, finally puts her seat belt on, starts the car, looks over this way! Drives out of the space, drives off. A leaf on the floor goes past me gets blown by the wind. Old hunch back man passes me his hood on his coat gets blown up onto his head, he carry’s on walking, don’t know if he knows. There is a big mwtal cage in the middle of the car park with some kind of machinery in it, what is it? what is it for? why is it there? Why do people have to pay to use the car park? what good does anyone get out of that? £1.50!! Ticket warden comes out fromt he stairs, i haven’t got a ticket! He walks the other way first, phew! Best get a ticket! How to ticket wardens sleep at night? Why do they wear yellow? A woman and her little boy come from the stairs, the little boy is holding his mums hand, how cute. Why do all the old people goto M&S, is it because they are the only people who can afford it, on their pensions? M&S have nice food! Mmm. who decided to put a car park on the roof of a building? why doesn’t all the weight from the cars collapse the roof?

Thank you picture - One day brief

Today we were set a one day brief based on Daniel Eatock's 'Thank you pictures'.

A thank you picture is basically any of the following ;  incident, alignment, coincidence, viewpoint, temporary situation and other small things that often go unnoticed.

So based on this we had to go out into the environment and collect a thank you picture. Here's what i came back with...

A poorly pipe...

Keep clear ...

End Sting

Our most recent brief at college is to create an end - sting in Flash.  A end-sting is a identity, logotype, symbol or trademark that appears at the end of a tv ad and is nearly always animated. We all had to pick companies out of a hat and create a end-sting  for that company which re-inforces the company's brand/image. I picked out Hovis, i enjoyed this breif, it gave us chance to work with programs we haven't worked with before. I ended up creating two end-stings but there is a obvious winner.

This was the final one i went with...

Pictograms

We have been given a short brief at college, it is to
get us used to using illustrator. The brief is to create two pictograms, one of myself and one o
f a class mate, pictograms are simplified pictures of people or things ie. the walk man on traffic lights, they are different from symbols which are usually abstract images ie. the nike swoosh.

This is my pictogram of myself ....

And this is James ....

UPDATE!!!!!! My tutor said that he couldn't recognise that the top pictogram was me so i've made this new one! which i think is worse!!!

Identity brief

Our new brief is to develop an identity  - logo and application, working in a group of 5 including myself. We have to compile a list of events and locations. Then we had to create thumbnails of hybrids (a thing made by combining two different elements), from our lists.

Here are some of the idea we have at the moment....

UPDATE:  We have decided to go with the stamp idea and have worked on it further and this is what we now have...

Our idea is a Stamp convention in Stockport, we have took the stamp aspect from the convention and the bottom edge of the stamp makes the viaduct in Stockport and the train running over it just enhances the fact its a viaduct. This is not the finished piece but is close.

2nd year electives

This year we had to chose two electives which would each last for 6 weeks, i chose to do typography and concept studies. In typography we were asked to create a alphabet we were given a selection of word and we had to create a type relating somehow to this words, whether it be a direct link or not. I chose the word disabled, i decided to source images of appliances which disabled people use in everyday life and create a alphabet from these images.

Concept studies is all about ideas and thinking we were asked to think of anything we want really, it was a very open brief. I chose to design a range of poster which would have pictures of car parks, street, houses etc and everything would have a price tag on. The concept behind this idea is that everything evolves around money, and everything comes with a price.

1st year work

Here is some examples of my work that i did in the first year of my degree course. I can't remember the brief's word by word but i do know that we could only use type to create images and we all got given a type face to work with, mine was Scala sans.

D&AD Student brief

D&AD student award competition is our most recent brief, we have had to choose one out of four briefs to develop idea's for, then after four weeks of idea's generating we get given another four competition briefs to choose one to develop. Then after we have developed two different competition briefs we will choose one to go ahead with and if it's good enough we will be entered into the competition. The first brief i have chose is to design three front covers for Faber and Faber's film range books. We are only aloud to use type and the design must be able to be applied to all the different books within the film range. The second brief i chose was to design a new look and the packaging for a range of seeds called 'Grow Your Own' at Homebase. It is a range of fruit and veg seeds for novice gardeners to encourage them to grow their own produce as it is cheaper and healthier.

Magazine Brief: Ted

Recently at college we have had to create a magazine consisting of a front and back cover and 3 double page spreads. We had three choices we could either re-design New Scientist magazine or The Observer free insert or create a new magazine based on a website called Ted. So i chose to do Ted! Therefore main article wasn't given to me like the other magazines so i went off and chose a article on how children learn, then got to work. Four weeks later the deadline arrives and i have a magazine sitting in front of me. As part of the brief we had to make a 1 minute movie showing how we got to the finished product, i can't upload the video at the moment but here are some pictures of my finished magazine.
